Raise your hand if you’re planning new photoshoots instead of editing photos from recent shoots!! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ Why are cosplayers wired like cats chasing lasers? One of the things I’m doing in the new year is going through cosplay photo folders and getting more images uploaded to my website. I still have so many nice pics of Evelynn that I haven’t shared yet. Here is one of them! I made the coat as nice as possible so I can put it in my normal wardrobe rotation. Sure would be cool to wear it to a nice dinner one day... hopefully lol Maybe I’ll style a celebratory outfit around the coat 🤔! . . . #kda #kdacosplay #kdaevelynn #baddest #kdabaddest #kdapopstars #leagueoflegendscosplay #lolcosplay #riotgames #evelynn #evelynncosplay #evelynnkda #evelynnlol

Do you ever have a cosplay deja vu? Years before I made Vayne’s unique red tail coat, I cosplayed the Gunner class from the Aion games and also had to make a super weird extreme high low tail coat thing. The Gunner coat was made with a thick corduroy and leather, and you can see in the second picture that my mom modeled it beautifully! I finished it while visiting her in Germany before debuting the costume at a European con. Vayne’s coat is made with maroon marine vinyl and is decidedly heavier, but it’s also a weird coat with a cropped front tapering into long tails. There are undoubtedly similarities between the costumes not only in color but also theme - ornate but easy to move in bodysuits, utility belts, stylish coats that don’t get in the way of fighting (all warrior characters should be wearing coats like these!) and of course - double fisting deadly weapons lol. Isn’t it funny how we are drawn to similar characters and aesthetics even when we’re not planning it? I’m currently (unsuccessfully) trying to make less purple costumes because I keep getting swept away by characters with either purple color family hair or outfits 😆 What unexpected coincidences have you noticed in your cosplays? Throwback to one of my past pattern designs for the @mccallpatterncompany! I went for a fantasy theme with garment elements that could easily be altered for a variety of costumes. I especially love short boleros with giant sleeves, and in fact wanted these sleeves to be even bigger but they wouldn’t have fit in the pattern envelope 😆. This is M7765 if you want to try it out. #cosplaypatterns #mccall #yayahanpattern #fantasypattern #fantasycosplay #fantasycostume

Of course I have to share my Scarlet Witch cosplays in honor of WandaVision! I made Classic Wanda back in 2011 if I remember correctly, and I wore it to many conventions because I liked the costume and the character so much. Then, when Wanda got her own comic series The New Scarlet Witch, I was excited to make her modernized outfit for the Marvel Cosplay Cover project. The bejeweled headpiece was the most fun part of making that costume. I’ve always been drawn to Wanda and her origin/powers and role in the Marvel universe, so it’s a pleasure to see her story continue with Vision. I’m into the new show so far and very curious where they will go with this! What do you think? Have you watched #WandaVision yet? #scarletwitch #scarletwitchcosplay #wandamaximoff #wandamaximoffcosplay #marvel #marvelcosplay #comiccosplay #marvelcosplaycovers

Thank you all so much for the kind words on my new Vayne costume! Today I share the full photo gallery with you - on my yayahan.com website! Click the ⛓🌲in my Bio! I also wrote a blog entry on the experience of making Vayne as a #LeaguePartner and included some fun behind the scenes pictures. Full blog also on my site! A huge thank you to @riotgames for sponsoring this costume, and @leagueoflegends for creating such iconic characters like Vayne. Photo credit goes to @legendofmicah and Brian Boling Of course, if you are curious how I made this costume and the crossbows, the costume build video is accessible through my links. There were so many components to the costume that I’m considering making a separate, more detailed video on the wood/gold crossbow with narration throughout. It would be closer to a tutorial and give a lot more insight to the steps. If that interests you, let me know in the comments! If any other part of Vayne interests you and you want to know more about the technique, please also drop a comment. I found a lot of use for double-sided tape for some reason lol. Thanks, friends! . . . . . #leagueoflegends #vayne #nighthunter #lolchampions #lol #league #vaynecosplay #leaguecosplay #leagueoflegendscosplay #lolcosplay #gamingcosplay

One of the only times I ventured outside for photos last year was to a local park for Enlightened Byleth from Fire Emblem Three Houses. Taken near sunset on an overcast day, the photos have a serene quality to them. I have another Three Houses cosplay in the works and am also kinda itching to replay the game. Regrettably, costume crafting and Switch-playing are not compatible activities. 😅 Photo by Brian Boling Costume made by me Majority of materials from @cosplayfabrics Wig from @ardawigs Resin dagger & emblem from @thedangerousladies #fireemblemthreehouses #byleth #fireemblemcosplay #bylethcosplay #fe3h #enlightenedbyleth #cosplayportrait #cosplayfabrics #ardawigs #dangerousladies

The three things that dominated my year: 1️⃣ I made a few costumes, mostly of lavender haired characters. If 2020 taught me anything, it was to refocus on the creative process. I’ve talked a bit about how social media can really diminish one’s feeling of accomplishment and how that has been compounded in 2020 by the lack of cons and in-person interactions. It took a while to shift my mindset to reveling in the days spent in the workshop instead of worrying about algorithms and tags. I finally got there toward the end of the year and will take that energy into 2021 with me. 2️⃣ I published a book - “Yaya Han’s World of Cosplay” - which has been a long-standing dream. I wrote about my life, how cosplay shaped me as a person, and what makes this community so unique and worth being a part of. I’ve never poured so much of myself into one project or been so honest about my mistakes and shortcomings. It’s been a bittersweet experience to release a book during a pandemic. I am grateful for everyone’s support in buying and reading the book, but without without events or signings (face-to face conversations), I can’t grasp the impact and I sometimes wonder if I had dreamt the existence of this book lol. 3️⃣ My small business survived because of face masks. Without cons to sell our usual cosplay products at, we pivoted to making face masks in the Spring. We developed our own system of hand-making masks, including a socially distanced production/shipping schedule and joining the Great Cotton Hunt of 2020. We are proud to have donated masks to hospitals and communities in need, and relieved to have kept everyone employed through these hard months. We seriously can’t thank those enough who chose to purchase face masks from us. I didn’t really wanna do a 2020 wrap-up because frankly, I’m ready for this year to be over, but I had to get my thoughts out on these three items at least. I’m acutely aware of my privilege and luck compared to so many people in the world and the only resolution I have for 2021 is to be more appreciative for everything. Thank you all for reading and good luck to us all in the new year. 💜

What I liked the most about WW84 was the gold armor. The early promo images featuring the armor inspired me to make this headpiece. The textured vinyl feathers and EVA foam are both from my @cosplayfabrics line. I have a full tutorial video with free template, too! Just go to my y0utvbe in the ⛓🌲! The movie itself did not grip me as much as the 1st one but I need to rewatch it before I form an opinion. Love that armor though ☺️✨❤️ Photo by Brian Boling

Weee I’ve been signing lotsa prints, including this Madam Hydra! It always makes me smile when underrated costumes get picked for autographs. I made this outfit a few years ago and really had fun mixing a bunch of different fabrics. The photo was taken in a Tokyo cosplay studio! I brought my own whip but it was so convenient to be able to rent prop guns for 200 yen! Thank you all who have participated in my Black Friday / Cyber Monday sale so far! I’m deep in crafting mode working on an exciting new costume that I can’t show you yet, so for the next little while I will post some of my older costumes! Especially ones that were made during mad con crunch because for the first time in 11 months, I’m feeling the familiar con crunch panic lol! Honestly didn’t know I would miss this feeling so much, nor how much I needed an unmovable deadline to combat pandemic fatigue. I made this Marvel Phoenix costume for SDCC one year and I’m pretty sure the paint was still drying when I boarded my flight to San Diego lol. I got all ambitious and made a black bodysuit with a ton of decorative seams (that are not very visible lol), a Worbla chest plate + shoulders where I added stylized feather shapes, and sourced gold buckles on eBay that I only came in a bag of 100, which means I still have about 80 buckles to this day 😅. Anyone need gold buckles? Lol The photo was taken at Megacon (right?) by LJinto, during a rare moment away from my booth. Oh, to do impromptu photo shoots in convention halls and hotel lobbies... how I miss those hectic days. Anyway, back to the grind I go, wish me luck that I can get a lot done today!!!

Gaaaah still neck deep in this NDA costume project with no time to think about anything else. Ok, except the hour each week to freak out about The Mandalorian. This season is mind blowing! I’m on crafting day 15 and have another 10 or so to go, so I will fight on and hopefully get this costume done in time!! While my daily crafting grind continues, let me share one of the most con crunched costumes of my past - Carmilla, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. I made her for a competition which already meant added pressure, I spent months fighting with red velvet to make all this weird 3 dimensional shapes, and then Atlanta got FLOODED the week of the event! I was desperately clearing out my basement two days before I had to leave for the con, with a nearly finished Carmilla strewn about the entire space upstairs. Then there were all this logistical issues of putting on body paint, a giant velvet outfit with a 16-foot train and a wig helmet at a convention center in New York city and somehow slithering to the competition hall in time. It was the longest day, weekend, and months of crunch time leading up to the culmination of cosplaying Carmilla but dang - I have so many good memories of those times! I made this costume in 2009, when there were way less distractions in the form of social media, and also less expectations and pressure from the public. For months, it was just me and the costume. I remember spending all these days just experimenting and discovering new techniques and ENJOYING creating this character piece by piece. I’m sure there were many moments of frustration and anxiety, but right now I don’t remember any of them. When I look at photos of Carmilla, I think of how nicely everything came together and how happy I am with this entire project. Not every costume leaves that impression! Like many (I’m sure), I have costumes that I love but that come with not so great memories, or feelings of “I wish I had done this part differently”. Carmilla is one of the few costumes I’ve made that carry none of that baggage! She has been one of the most important costumes during my cosplay journey for so many reasons, including pure serotonin whenever I think of her. That shit is precious. All photos are taken by @annafischerphoto, at three different events no less! (Also precious memories!!) #vampirehunterd #vampirehunterdbloodlust #carmillacosplay #vampirecosplay #redvelvet #countessofblood #animecosplay #vampirehunter

I’m missing friends and family especially during the holiday season this year. A few years ago, my sweet dog Nemo passed away in the days leading up to Christmas and I was completely devastated. @jessicanigri was in town visiting and dragged me out of the house to do this festive cosplay shoot, amongst other activities, and it really distracted me/cheered me up. I can’t look at our photos from that day without remembering how much it meant to be surrounded by people who care about me during such a hard time. I hope we can go back to a world next year where we can spend time with the people who are important to us, be creative without restrictions, and be there in person for each other during tough moments. My holiday weekend will be very quiet, since my entire family is on different continents and I am not gathering with any friends this Christmas. But I think of them and dream of the day I can hug them again. Wishing you all a happy, safe and calm holiday week 💜 (Photo by @pixelettepinups)

Alright!! I have until Sunday to finish the new costume so I’m literally backed in a corner and going into turbo mode! Not unlike when I made Batgirl in a mad dash, not just for a con but also for a TV show. With all the resin and urethane used, there were a lot of “waiting for chemicals to cure” moments and I had to plan the progress according to the materials. While something was in a mold or had to cure, I would sew on the bodysuit or cape. But as with the current project, splitting up the workload in two locations (the warehouse for crafting that requires machinery and can get dirty, and my home for sewing) adds more difficulty and requires more planning. Hopefully today is the last workday at the warehouse and then I can hole up at home until Sunday to finish... EVERYTHING! 😤 Wish me luck! It’s beast mode time! Wow I’ve been absent for almost a week! I finished my secret costume and did a video/photo shoot in the cold outdoors that I’m still recovering from. The results won’t be shared for a little while but the hardest part is done! Thank you for cheering me on these past few weeks! It feels very weird to finish a big costume project without the immediate gratification of wearing it to a con. This is one more vital link between cosplay and cons that we probably did not appreciated enough before 2020. I used to always think “Wish we could shoot this new costume I worked so hard on away from a con and get really great photos!” because during the hectic days at an event, you don’t always get to fully enjoy the fruits of your labor (the first wear is always a test run) or the dream photos you want. But now, 9+ months without conventions, what I miss the most is the interactions with people while in costume. Even when I was sleep-deprived, hungry and exhausted after con crunching, traveling and setting up, the first time I wore a new costume would always create some unforgettable memories involving other cosplayers and fans. As proud as I am of the costumes I’ve made this year, none of them have been worn to a con and it’s just so... weird! It’s like I started with a drawn artwork and ended up full circle with a photograph. Gosh I hope we get the magic of cons back next year. Accompanying photo is my Geisha Sheryl Nome, shot not at a con but definitely after many wears and wonderful interactions at cons. 💜 After spending a month as a crafting gremlin, I just wanted to share a pretty photo! Thank you Brian Boling for taking it! #cosplaymusings #cosplay #animecosplay #sherylnome #macrosscosplay #macrossfrontier

Really missing Japan lately. Everything I watch seems to be set in Japan at one point or another. The latest, Case 4 of The Great Pretender, really hit me in the kokoro. This Geisha photo was shot in a Machiya (traditional Japanese house) in Kyoto during a wonderful trip last year. I truly can’t wait to go back. Might have even looked up flights for next summer 🙄..... only if it would be safe by then, of course. Photo by Brian Boling #geisha #oiran #kyoto #machiya #japan
